Weighing Loaded Coach -Houston

We will be replacing our coach tires next week. Does anyone know of a good public scales in Houston area that can weigh the wheels independently ? I found one only in the yellow pages for commercial trucks. Do RV sales / service centers provide this service ? Jim

Guns and RVs

We are going to begin full timing in November. We are in the last day or so of disposing of "stuff" so the house is empty. Have to make a decision about some handguns and some family heirloom hunting weapons. I presume many of you may know people who carry weapons in their units rather then store or sell them. I'd like to keep a couple but am wondering how you handle going into some of the national parks that do not allow them. Is your coach searched when going into a national park ? I read where they have to be "disabled" (whatever that means) or left out of the park. I also assume if passing through Canada to Alaska they need to be left in the U.S. ? Any advice appreciated. Jim

RE: Big Bend National Park in November

Thanks everyone for the great information. We just finished up our "getting rid of stuff" moving sale today. Tomorrow the rest goes a couple of directions, then new tires, weighing, loading up, and hitting the road. Our first destination as "fulltimers" will be Big Bend. Hope to see some of you there. We want to leave Houston on November 1, and head west. See you on the road. Thanks again. Jim and Carmel Richmond, Texas

Big Bend National Park in November

We would like to send a few weeks in the Big Bend National Park or close by with easy access to park (inside park prefered). Would appreciate any personal experiences on which big rig size sites are good sites in Rio Grand Village . Checked the booking system and most sites seem to be first come first served. Fair enough. Anyone know how busy Rio Grand campground might be most of November ? Thanks.

RE: Full Timing

My wife and I have been waiting for a year to sell our house. Bought our Dutch Star two years ago. We are now fully retired, with my retirement in late July. Have now decided to go full timing Nov. 1, even with the house unsold. We will leave empty with a real estate agent to sell or rent. For the past few weeks we have been getting ready to get rid of accumulated "stuff". It is absolutely amazing, as you prepare for a "moving sale / garage sale" just how much junk you really have. Things that you bought because you couldn't do without them, the forgot you had them or put them aside to enjoy at some future date that never arrived. This has resulted in an agonizing labor intensive preparation for sale and having our house look like a resale shop. I'm handling it fine but my wife is finding it all depressing. We are therefore having our sale this weekend, placing a few expensive pieces with an upscale consignment shop, and what does not sell is going to be donated to some veterans or Salvation Army type thrift store for their stock. My advice learned from all this is that if you're seriously considering full timing now, quit buying...and start selling now / giving to kids/ etc. Don't wait till the last few weeks to dispose of property. It can be challenging for the wife.... I also echo that this forum and Escapees can be a wonderful source of great advice. JS

Dash Radio's AM band on Dutch Star

In my 2004 Dutch Star 4025, I have great FM, but on AM I get static, seldom any stations. Anyone know a fix for this ? Thanks. Jim

RE: Where Are The Wannabe's Now?

We're accepting a cash offer today..guaranteed the money in 10 days.No inspection, no hassle. Buyer also made an offer on the remaining furniture and we're taking that also. Probably self convincing logic but the longer we wait for our price, the more potential maintenance, repair, taxes, insurance we'll have that will eat up some of the extra selling price.....if and when it goes up. I lost twice as much in the market in one day this week then the difference between our asking price and what we're accepting. Tired of being battered around by the economy and all the conditions out of our control. Invested most of retirement in conservative instruments and kept a house in Corpus Christi which is rented. Hope to be joining the ranks of the full timers on my birthday in October. Time to make some memories. Be safe out there. Jim and Carmel

Carpet Replacement Recommendations-Dutch Star

Would like to replace the light colored carpeting in my 2004 Dutch Star, quad slide. Just can't seem to get it clean and keep it that way. Anyone ever returned their coach to Newmar for replacement ? Any idea of cost ? Anyone have any recommendations of where I might have this done RIGHT at reasonable price ? It's currently garaged in Houston but will be "on the road" full time soon. Thanks for any responses. Jim

Best Place to winter 2008/2009

Just beginning to full time. We're looking for recommendations for best place to spend the winter in either Arizona or New Mexico. Texas is nice but we want to get out of Texas for a spell. Looking for scenery; no or few freezing nights, interesting views, history, hiking, friendly people, big rig friendly, 50 amp service. Any location / park recommendations appreciated. Thanks. SEA EAGLE Inflatable boat

I have an opportunity to receive a 11' Sea Eagle inflatable as a retirement gift. Thinking about including it as fulltiming equipment in the next few weeks as we move to that lifestyle. Anyone have one ? Safe ? Useful as a boat to carry ? Thanks. Jim

Onan 7.5 Shutting Down

Have a 7.5 Onan Diesel in a 2004 Dutch Star. Has plenty of oil , plenty of coolant, low hours and has been maintained but garaged for a few months with small usage. It starts fine but then shuts down after an hour or so under a light load. I am getting a flashing code which is three flashes ...pause... then three flashes , repeating itself. Any ideas ? Thanks. Big Bend Area October 2008

We are both finally retired and hope to be fulltiming sometime in September. We would like to explore the Big Bend area of Texas during the month of October. Might stay there for the month to explore, save fuel, and get the best rates. We would appreciate recommendations on the best centralized place to stay given our rig, and our plans stated above. Rig is 41' Dutch Star and Jeep Liberty 4wd. Would like to do some hiking but will be getting into that slowly at first Thanks for any advice on places to stay, things to do. Jim and Carmel

Driving Around Alaska- Route Suggestions ?

Just retired and my wife is taking me to Alaska for most of August as a retirement present before we begin fulltiming. My job is to decide on the route to drive from the Anchorage airport for 26 days of sightseeing. We have been to Denali but it's a definite stop, but the rest is to be planned. If anyone out there has done this, I would appreciate route ideas. Going for a small mid size, no SUV, for fuel savings so I probably can't get off fairly decent roads.I have a Milepost ordered an it's on the way. Any ideas appreciated. We're also looking at some select Hostels or maybe some tent camping. Thanks.

I plan on installing on coach and on Jeep, so 10 wheels total on ground All recommendations appreciated. Thanks. Jim
